History of ISLM

The Institute of Shipping Management, (ISM) was registered in Singapore with ROS, in 1977 and began its long journey. Soon after its inception ISM grew rapidly and full of enthusiasm, with the participation of prominent leaders of the Maritime Industry. Subsequently, ISM evolved into Institute of Shipping and Logistics Management (ISLM).
As an independent non-profit professional organization, ISM played a pivotal role in establishing the status of qualified shipping personnel in commercial organizations and industries, promoting interests of shipping communities, endorsing the development of improved methods in the shipping trade and encouraging shipping personnel to acquire higher qualifications in modern shipping.
ISM had collaborations with local, regional and international Institutes and Organizations in pursuit of its objectives. Alliances to provide Maritime courses, symposiums on topics of importance, job and trade fairs were some of its achievements. It also published a respected annual magazine at the time of its bespoke yearly gala dinner. Newsletters too were published time to time, as well as its hosting of seminars on important topics. Many stalwarts of Singapore ran the ramparts of this esteemed organization, and it is no wonder ISM truly flew its flag so high.
The ISM began with a burst of enthusiasm but the momentum slowly declined with the passage of time. The 2008 recession has passed and the next one is likely to come soon. It is said that one should train during a recession to be ready for the good times. ISM, now as ISLM endeavors to regain its active role and participation to the meet demands of the growing scope of the mercantile business interests.
